Founded in Dunkirk, Indiana, the Indiana Glass Company was one of the largest and longest-running manufacturers of mass-produced utility, tableware, and decorative glassware in American history. While fine glassmakers like Fostoria targeted the high-end luxury market, Indiana Glass built its empire by making affordable, durable, and colorful glass for everyday American homes and commercial businesses for nearly a century.

Company History Summary

  • Origins (1895–1907): The plant began in 1895 as the Beatty-Brady Glass Company before being absorbed by the National Glass Company combine in 1899. After National Glass went bankrupt, local investor Frank W. Merry formed a new group to purchase the facility, officially establishing the Indiana Glass Company in 1907.
  • Depression Era & Mass Production (1920s–1930s): Indiana Glass established itself as one of the seven primary American manufacturers of “Depression Glass,” producing millions of colorful, low-cost tableware sets for home kitchens and soda fountains.
  • Mid-Century Expansion & Tiara Exclusives (1950s–1980s): Acquired by the Lancaster Colony Corporation in 1957, Indiana Glass adapted to post-war trends by manufacturing heavy pressed glass, hen-on-nest novelties, and colorful barware. In 1970, Lancaster Colony created Tiara Exclusives, a direct-sales home party company (similar to Tupperware) that marketed Indiana Glass products nationwide.
  • Decline & Closure (1990s–2002): Competition from cheap foreign glass imports, the discontinuation of the Tiara party line in 1998, and changing consumer tastes eroded sales. Following a three-month labor strike and dropping retail demand, the historic Dunkirk plant permanently shut down in November 2002.
Tiara/Indiana Glass Sandwich Glass Mugs
Beautiful intricate pattern evolving since the late 1800’s, first introduced by a glassmaker in the town of Sandwich by a company called Boston & Sandwich Glass Company, Massachusetts. A few glass makers reproduced the flower and scroll with the dotted raised background since it was first introduced. They are Anchor Hocking, Duncan and Miller, Indiana, Westmoreland and Indiana Glass/Tiara. From the 1970 to 1998, Tiara Exclusives offered the Sandwich pattern using Indiana’s molds. Tiara marketed the glass through “housewife parties”, just like Tupperware did.
