About Blenko Art Glass

Blenko Art Glass is an iconic American glassmaker celebrated for its hand-blown, brilliantly colored decorative glassware. Founded in 1921 in Milton, West Virginia, by English immigrant William John Blenko, the company initially produced stained glass windows for cathedrals. When the Great Depression hit, the company pivoted to decorative tableware. By retaining 19th-century mouth-blowing techniques and multi-person artisan teams rather than automating, Blenko ensured that each piece retained an organic, one-of-a-kind character.

The signature Blenko style is defined by vibrant, single-hue colors like tangerine and turquoise, heavy walls, and fluid, oversized silhouettes. Its most famous piece is the 384 Water Bottle, a dual-spout rectangular bottle designed in 1938 that remains a best-seller today. Authentic pieces are highly prized by collectors for their raw, unpolished pontil marks on the base and captured air bubbles.

Blenko’s mid-century dominance was driven by a series of legendary resident design directors who were given complete creative freedom:

  • Winslow Anderson (1947–1953): Introduced sleek, organic shapes that won Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Good Design awards.
  • Wayne Husted (1953–1963): Defined the peak mid-century look with architectural floor decanters and sculptural “genie” bottles.
  • Joel Philip Myers (1963–1970): Bridged industrial manufacturing with the abstract, free-form American Studio Glass movement.
  • Hank Murta Adams (1988–1994): Injected a raw, textured, and edgy modern aesthetic into the company’s catalog.

Today, Blenko remains family-owned and continues to operate out of West Virginia. By combining its historic legacy with modern artisan collaborations, Blenko keeps the tradition of American handmade art glass vibrant and relevant for contemporary collectors.
