Cased Glass Squirrel by One of England’s Finest Glass Makers
This grey squirrel looks as if it has real fur. The artist encased a fine grain mottled layer between the inner black layer and outer crystal layer and the result is fabulous. Shown eating pistachios because it’s cute, and it helps show actual size. Hand formed art glass by one of England’s finest glassmakers, Wedgwood. Probably dates from the 1960s to 1980s. Difficult cased glass technique. In excellent condition with worn label and “Wedgwood England” etched on the base seat (etching doesn’t show up in image). The gold label was used by Wedgwood in 1981 through 1982. This hungry, fat squirrel is about 25 years old.
Wedgwood became part of Waterford-Wedgwood in 1986 and this merged company continues to play a major role in the glass industry, but not as Wedgwood Glass. The Wedgwood Glass operation was closed in 1988 and all the pattern books were destroyed at that time.
The squirrel measures 5.25″ tall, 4.25″ long and 1.5″ wide. It weighs 1.5 lbs.[color-box]More About Western European Glass[/color-box]
