Blue Moon and Star Glass Canister Set by LE Smith
Pair of early Moon and Star pattern kitchen canisters. Made by LE Smith, circa 1930s – 1940s. The set includes a large gallon canister and a quarter gallon canister made with thick mold blown glass with pontil scars on seat (left by the makers tool). The containers were made with a 4-part mold, lids were 2-part. Both canisters have a solid band of bottom-wear which is found on the seats of very old glass caused by years of shelf-wear. Solid bands are considered an asset as they prove old age and are not considered damage.
In an image below, these canisters were imaged under blacklight. They light up neon green but are not considered Vaseline glass. It is either Uranium or Manganese in the glass recipe causing the neon reaction. These metals were commonly used during the Depression years.
Large canister measures 11½” tall, weighs 5 lbs. Smaller canister is 7″ tall and weighs 2½ lbs.
