Lovely Hand-Pressed Sandwich Glass Bell
Sandwich pattern bell in amber glass with crystal ringer. This bell is “hand-pressed”, meaning there are no mold lines and the glass has fluid smooth angles, it was made the old-fashioned way. But surprisingly, this bell was made by Tiara in the 1970s; the last, to date, reproduction of this famous antique pressed glass pattern. The handle of the bell has an intentionally placed air bubble (an intentional “single” bubble is very hard to accomplish), added to mimic antique glass that often had unintentional air bubbles. Ring the family to dinner with this retro sandwich bell.
This beautiful bell’s Sandwich pattern has a long history. The pattern style emerged from America’s first glass makers in the 1800s, adapted from earlier European sandwich pattern styles. Duncan Miller made an exceptional line called “Early American Sandwich” in 1940. Tiffin, an affiliate of Duncan, also produced the same pattern in elegant glass. Indiana Glass, a very old glass maker, made a variation of the same mold purchased from Duncan. Anchor Hocking made a version of this pattern from 1930s – 1970s (visible seams). Finally Tiara Exclusives purchased the molds from Indiana Glass and distributed it through in-home Hostess Parties. Tiara Glass closed its doors in the late 1980s.
The Sandwich glass bell measures 5.75″ tall.
