Cambridge Glass Black Amethyst Tall Shouldered Vase
Truly stunning large vintage black amethyst vase. This lovely old deco vase is huge. Measures 13″ tall, 9″ at widest point, widest girth of 27″. Weighs 4 lbs. In normal lighting, the glass is black. But when a bright light is shone through the glass, it glows a deep, dark, rich amethyst. Glassmakers of the past had trouble producing pure black glass. They used very dark amethyst to achieve the black color, producing what we call “black amethyst” today.
The uranium glass flower frog (lights up neon green under blacklight) sits atop a flat rim on the vase that is designed to hold a flower frog. The flower frog included with this vase is not the original flower frog. This vaseline glass frog was made by L.E. Smith in the 1930’s/40’s. It fits perfectly….and looks awesome. The vase was made by Cambridge Glass, an elegant maker of the early 1900’s to the late mid 1900’s. This vase was probably made in the 1930’s to 1950’s. In excellent condition with intact label. Hand blown from mold. The label says to expect to see some bubbles trapped within the glass, but this vase has no bubbles. Hi-gloss surface reflects light during imaging. The areas of darker and lighter black are only reflections. The vase is solid black…in appearance.
