The Scandinavian Nordic Region

Glass from the Scandinavian region dates back at least to the 1700’s. Beginning in small towns with names associated with Nordic – Scandinavian glass companies today like Orrefors and Kosta, the small glass making communities eventually became the glass making companies. In Sweden, the glassworks The Scandinavian glass making communities, surrounded by ample forests filled with production resources, produced fine crystal, excelling in engraved and enamel décor, for hundreds of years.

In the late 1800’s, the community companies hired artists unfamiliar with glass making who joined with the local craftsmen. The coupling of glass craftsmen with great artists such as Simon Gate and the Bergkvist brothers, catapulted the region’s rise to world-renowned status. By the mid-20th century the Nordic region glassworks offered the world the finest of modern glass.

The 1950’s ushered in the worldwide ‘Swedish Modern’ décor craze. The style was clean and sleek with flowing curves and imaginative colors. The Swedish Modern style was imitated by glassworks from other countries, endured for decades, and is popular again today.
