Glass from the Scandinavian region dates back at least to the 1700’s. Beginning in small towns with names associated with Nordic – Scandinavian glass companies today like Orrefors and Kosta, the small glass making communities eventually became the glass making companies. The 1950’s ushered in the worldwide ‘Swedish Modern’ décor craze. The style was clean and sleek with flowing curves and imaginative colors. The Swedish Modern style was imitated by glassworks from other countries, endured for decades, and is popular again today.
The glassworks of Scandinavia continue to produce utilitarian and glass art. In Sweden, a group of famous age-old glassworks, some still producing glass, is known as the Kingdom of Crystal. New glass, adapted to our energy starved economy, from the Nordic region is costly.
