Vintage Waterford Crystal Footed Vase in a Glandore Pattern Variation
Mid-20th century Waterford Crystal Glandore 7″ footed vase is in excellent, like new condition. It weighs 1.9 lbs. Made in Ireland. High brilliance and expert cut decor. Signed with Waterford acid etch on base.
Vintage Waterford crystal contains a good amount of lead in the glass batch. Lead is what differentiates crystal from other styles of glass. When lead is included in the glass recipe, the glass can be referred to as Crystal.
Glass factories of today rarely use lead. Partially because lead is becoming more and more expensive. Also, glass with lead must be subjected to extreme high heat from a furnace, which greedily consumes resources. So modern glass makers have mostly discontinued the use of lead. This unfortunately includes Waterford.
Vintage Waterford crystal is of much higher quality than contemporary Waterford. It’s heavier, contains lead which gives it hardness and brilliance, has better quality decor, and was usually made in Ireland. Today Waterford manufactures their glass in many countries.
Lead in glass is not dangerous to your health unless it is crushed up and eaten. This is a fact.
