Stunning Gold-Ruby Stained Irish Waterford Footed Bowl
This lovely footed bowl was made by Westmoreland Glass Co. (established in 1889 – closed in 1984). The pattern was called “Irish Waterford” or “Wakefield”. Bears the embossed Westmoreland WG mark on the center of the foot. Gold was used in the stain recipe, it can be seen in the light reflections in the images. Gold was necessary to produce the dark ruby red color. Westmoreland produced this glass as exact reproductions of antique glass during the George Washington period. Heavy, quality glass, made with a 4-part mold. This bowl was made in the 1970s.
The colorless glass glows light green under blacklight. This is evidence of Manganese, which will turn shades of purple if left in direct, prolonged sunlight. It is odd that glass from the 1970s would contain manganese, because the mineral was used in the early 20th century to increase the strength of glass, and would have only been used in the late 20th century to produce an exact reproduction of antique glass .
