Pair of big-eyed Scandinavian barn owls in handblown glass.

SOLD.  Designed by the infamous Oiva Toikka of Finland (more artist info below images).

As an avid owl collector, I have to say that these are the most desirable barn owls I've ever seen.  They are charming, and beam with personality.  Wild big eyes appear to be on the lookout and a bit nervous.  These are fabulous owls.

The big barn owl (riihipollo in Finnish) is very big, measuring 6.5" tall, 4" at widest with a girth of 12" and weighs 2 lbs.  The little barn owl ( riihipollon poikanen in Finnish) is very little, measuring 2.5" tall, 1.75" at widest with a girth of 6" and weighs 1/2 lb.

Hand-blown with extremely difficult decorating techniques and executed with an expert hand. The opaque glass is cased (layers of glass blown together).  Inside is milk white.  The exterior layer is black and white, with just a hint of blue and brown graduating slightly upward.  And of course, they feature big comical, yet life-like, yellow and black eyes.

Each bird in the Toikka collection is made by hand in Finland.  No two are exactly alike.  All are signed by Toikka and include the iittala label and gift box. Also included is a pamphlet about Toikka and Iittala, including images of 40 birds with their names and date of design.

A most memorable gift for your most memorable loved-one...or for yourself.  A dream gift for owl collectors and art lovers.  Perfect for the executive desk, or teacher's desk...perfect for anybody's desk.    Click here to learn more about Iittala

Oiva Toikka Dedicated to the arts, theatre and design

Professor Oiva Toikka (b. 1931), one of the greatest names in Finnish glass of the past 50 years, is the designer of “The Birds” collection offered by Iittala, Finland’s finest glass house. The long-lived stylized blown crystal birds (first introduced in 1973) have enjoyed world-wide popularity for over 35 years and are Toikka’s best known work.

His creative glass artworks range in many forms and ingenious styles…and all are stunning and scarce.  Toikka has enjoyed an international career and received numerous awards such as the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal, World Glass Now 85 Award, Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal to name a few.

The Birds by Toikka are made new and by hand in Finland.  These fascinating avian artworks incorporate difficult glass blowing and decorating techniques requiring great skill to accomplish.  A current range is always available, but all items are in limited production.  Toikka retires his birds on a regular basis, adding to their collectible value.  Vintage or retired birds often fetch much more than the original selling price.  Art glass collectors, bird fanciers, and art lovers of all tastes are drawn to these beautifully imaginative works of art designed by the infamous Nordic maestro Toikka..

Birds from the Toikka collection are always signed with his name and “Nuutajarvi” (his studio), and some are numbered limited Editions.  The signature stamp looks like this: O.Toikka Nuutajärvi.
